BMW is redesigning their long running sports sedan for 2027. The 2027 BMW 3-Series is now in its 8th generation and has been inspired by the styling of the “Neue Klasse” cars. A brand new interior has also been created along with a new M350 xDrive which replaces the M340i xDrive model.
The U.S. Lineup of models starts out with the 330 and 330 xDrive. Both use a 255-HP turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. The highest level of performance comes from the M350 xDrive model. This model uses a turbocharged 3.0-Liter Inline-Six (Hybrid) Engine and a 48-Volt Hybrid System. Together these two engines produce a combined total of 437 Horsepower.
The rear wheel drive version (the 330) will begin to sell for $51,250 and the all wheel drive version (the M350 xDrive) is priced highest within its line up of models with a base MSRP of $67,250. It has been announced by BMW that they plan to release the 2027 BMW 3-series in America during Q1 of 2027. They also state that the new sedan will be available to purchase from dealerships immediately following this release date.
The 2027 BMW 3-Series Gets a Major Design Change
The new 3-Series looks noticeably different from the current car.
BMW has slimmed down the kidney grilles and added new lighting elements with a horizontal design. The sedan also has shorter overhangs and a simpler side profile.
The front end brings back BMW’s shark-nose treatment, with the design taking cues from older models including the E24 6-Series. BMW also points to the proportions of the 2002 as an influence.
The result is a more restrained design than some of BMW’s recent models while still giving the 2027 BMW 3-Series a distinct appearance.
New Dashboard Brings Panoramic Vision
The interior gets one of the biggest changes.
BMW’s Panoramic Vision display stretches across the dashboard at the base of the windshield. It puts driving information in a wide display directly in the driver’s forward field of view.
A 17.9-inch center touchscreen sits below it and is angled toward the driver.
The layout is a major change from the previous 3-Series, which used a more conventional dashboard arrangement. BMW has retained familiar design elements, but most of the information and controls now revolve around the new digital interface.
Gasoline Models Keep the CLAR Platform
The gasoline-powered 2027 BMW 3-Series uses an extensively updated version of BMW’s CLAR II platform.
It is separate from the NCAR architecture used by BMW’s upcoming battery-electric i3. NCAR was developed around BMW’s sixth-generation battery technology and 800-volt electrical system.
BMW says the revised CLAR II chassis gets a quicker steering ratio and wider front and rear tracks.
The platform is also used by other BMW models, including the X3 and M5.
255-HP Four-Cylinder Powers the 330
The 2027 BMW 3-series 330 will use a 255-horsepower four-cylinder engine. A turbocharger will be used to create the additional power. Rear wheel drive will be standard with the 330. An all wheel drive option will also be available on the 330 xDrive model.
The 330 base price will begin at $51,250. The 330 xDrive model will cost $53,250, a $2,000 difference from the base model, because of the addition of all-wheel drive.
M350 xDrive Packs 437 Horsepower
The M350 xDrive will replace the M340i xDrive, utilizing an updated version of BMW’s B58 3.0 liter turbocharged inline-six engine. The 48 volt hybrid motor that is integrated with the eight speed automatic transmission has been added to the vehicle.
The total output of the powertrain is 437 hp. That’s a 51 hp increase over the M340i. Car and Driver tested both cars, and found the M350 xDrive to have a 0–60 mph acceleration time of 3.6 seconds, while the previous M340i xDrive had a 0–60 mph acceleration time of 3.7 seconds.
M350 xDrive Adds a Rear-Drive Drift Mode
The M350 xDrive is available only with all-wheel drive, but BMW’s Drift Moment function can disconnect the front axle and send the car into a rear-wheel-drive setup for controlled oversteer.
An electronically controlled limited-slip differential manages the rear axle, while adaptive dampers are standard.
The M350 xDrive also has model-specific exterior changes, including more aggressive bodywork and yellow daytime running lights.
