2027 Hyundai Tucson Spied: Boxy New Design, No Gas Engine, 62-Mile Electric Range

Spy photos of the 2027 Hyundai Tucson prototypes are out. The direction: boxier proportions, Santa Fe-style presence, and no combustion-only engines at all.

2027 is a full redesign. The current generation has been on sale since 2020.

What the Spy Photos Show

Heavy camouflage, but enough visible to read the intent.

Front end: more upright than the current car. Flat hood. Larger grille. Squarer nose. Cleaner sides — the creases and curves of the 2020 car are gone. Proportions pull toward the Santa Fe.

Rear: completely new. License plate moves off the tailgate and down to the bumper — a detail that sounds minor but changes the visual reading of the back end significantly. Vertical taillights, thin horizontal light bar connecting them. More character at the rear than the current car has.

The 2027 Hyundai Tucson reads heavier and more assertive than the car it replaces. Compact SUV buyers have been moving that direction. Hyundai followed.

Pleos Connect: The New Brain Inside

The 2027 Hyundai Tucson is expected to be among the first Hyundai models running Pleos Connect — the brand’s new operating system built on Android Automotive, developed specifically for Hyundai’s next generation of software-defined vehicles.

Main screen: 12.9 to 14.6 inches rumoured. Possibly paired with a 12.3-inch second display in a curved panel. Bigger than what the current Tucson has.

Running on Pleos Connect is Gleo — Hyundai’s AI-powered virtual assistant. Natural language commands — not the rigid keyword phrases older voice systems needed. Talk to it normally and it understands.

Hyundai is keeping physical buttons for frequently used functions. All-touch interiors have been a consistent complaint from drivers — this is a direct response to that. Somewhere between full touchscreen and button-heavy. The production car will show how well the balance works.

2027 Hyundai Tucson Drops Petrol-Only — Hybrid and PHEV Only From Launch

No combustion-only versions. No diesel. Every 2027 Hyundai Tucson is electrified. Two options:

Full hybrid: 1.6-litre turbo four plus electric motor. Around 231 horsepower combined. Same basic concept as the current hybrid, refined for the new generation.

Plug-in hybrid: New TMED-II evolution targeting 62 miles of electric-only range. Modest power bump over the current 288 horsepower PHEV. 62 miles is a big jump from where current PHEV Tucsons sit.

62 miles of electric range on a compact SUV PHEV changes how most people use the car. Average commute in most markets: under 40 miles. At 62 miles electric range, the 2027 Hyundai Tucson PHEV covers most people’s daily driving on battery alone. Petrol engine kicks in on longer trips. Less hybrid, more EV with a backup.

Not confirmed by Hyundai yet. Every competitor in this segment is pushing PHEV electric range higher — this fits that pattern.

2027 Hyundai Tucson Competes in the Highest-Volume SUV Segment on Earth

Tucson is one of Hyundai’s biggest sellers globally — US, South Korea, Europe, all of it. The competition it sits in: RAV4, Tiguan, CR-V, Escape, Sportage.

The 2020 Tucson’s angular design was polarising at launch. Four years later it looked ahead of its time. The 2027 Hyundai Tucson goes for conventional authority instead. Less polarising, more broadly appealing. Whether that trades away the design edge the 2020 car had is the real question.

The powertrain move to hybrid-only is also significant. RAV4 Hybrid outsells the petrol RAV4 in multiple markets. Hyundai read that trend and decided the 2027 Hyundai Tucson does not need a petrol-only entry point anymore.

Kia is doing the same with the Sportage. Two brands, same segment, same timing. Hyundai Motor Group made a group-level call — not two brands coincidentally landing in the same place.

2027 Hyundai Tucson — Reveal Timeline and What Follows

Reveal expected in 2027. Current generation runs until then. The Tucson shares its platform with the Kia Sportage, which is also due for a new generation — the two typically develop together and reveal in sequence.

Pleos Connect rolls out from 2026 onward. The 2027 Hyundai Tucson is one of the first real-world tests of the software at production scale.

ADAS specifics for the 2027 Hyundai Tucson: not yet detailed. Pleos Connect supports OTA updates — features can expand after the car is sold.
