The 2027 Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible brings Ford’s 795-hp supercharged V-8 to an open-top Mustang for the first time in more than a decade.
Ford revealed the car at the Woodward Dream Cruise in Detroit and plans to open orders this fall. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in spring 2027.
Power comes from the same supercharged 5.2-liter Predator V-8 used in the Dark Horse SC coupe. Output stands at 795 horsepower and 660 pound-feet of torque, with power sent to the rear wheels through a seven-speed Tremec dual-clutch transmission and carbon-fiber driveshaft.
Ford has made several changes to turn the 2027 Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible into a road-focused grand tourer rather than simply removing the roof from its track-oriented coupe.
The convertible gets a softer MagneRide suspension tune and cannot be ordered with the coupe’s Track package. Ford has also added a new Precision Purple exterior color, giving the open-top Mustang a finish with color-shifting effects.
2027 Mustang Dark Horse SC Convertible Uses a 795-HP Supercharged V-8
The 2027 Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible carries over the coupe’s Predator V-8.
A supercharger pushes output to 795 hp, while torque reaches 660 pound-feet.
Power travels through a seven-speed Tremec dual-clutch transmission before reaching the rear wheels. A carbon-fiber driveshaft is also part of the drivetrain.
Ford has not reduced engine output for the convertible. Removing the fixed roof therefore does not mean giving up any of the Dark Horse SC coupe’s headline power figures.
For anyone looking specifically at the 2027 Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible, engine performance remains one of its defining features.
Ford Tunes the Convertible for Grand Touring
Ford has given the 2027 Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible a different suspension setup from the coupe.
MagneRide adaptive dampers remain standard, but Ford says engineers gave the convertible a less aggressive tune with less emphasis on track driving.
Ford’s reason is straightforward: the convertible is intended to work as a grand tourer rather than a track-focused machine.
Mustang marketing manager Ryan Shaughnessy cited the Porsche 911 Cabriolet, Mercedes-AMG SL and Chevrolet Corvette Z06 as vehicles Ford considered when positioning the convertible.
The 2027 Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible therefore sits in a different part of the performance-car market from its fixed-roof sibling.
Track Package Is Not Available
Buyers ordering the 2027 Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible will not be able to select the coupe’s Track package.
The package includes several expensive performance components, including carbon-fiber wheels, stickier tires and carbon-ceramic brakes sourced from the Mustang GTD.
Ford’s decision removes some of the hardware designed for repeated track use.
The restriction also affects the available appearance choices. Without the Track package, buyers cannot select the Teal Accent package, because its teal-painted brake calipers are tied to the GTD-spec braking hardware.
Ford has therefore created a clear separation between the coupe and convertible rather than offering identical equipment with a retractable roof.
Convertible Keeps the Dark Horse SC Bodywork
Much of the aggressive exterior design carries over to the 2027 Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible.
The front end features multiple vents and intakes, including a pair of openings beside the grille. A carbon-fiber band runs between the mesh openings.
Swollen wheel arches, sharp side sills and rectangular exhaust outlets remain part of the design.
A large rear wing also carries over.
Under the hood, Ford adds a lightweight magnesium tower-to-tower brace.
Despite losing its fixed roof, the convertible does not receive additional structural bracing. Ford says the Mustang GT convertible’s body structure was already rigid enough for the Dark Horse SC application.
Ford Says No Extra Bracing Was Needed
Removing a fixed roof can create structural challenges, particularly when a vehicle is designed around high power and performance driving.
Ford’s engineers determined that the existing convertible structure was sufficiently rigid for the 2027 Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible.
Chief engineer Arie Groeneveld explained that the car’s grand-touring role also influenced the decision.
A track-focused convertible would have required more reinforcement, according to Groeneveld.
Ford instead developed the 2027 Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible around road use, keeping structural changes to a minimum while adjusting the suspension to suit its intended role.
The Roof Opens at the Push of a Button
Ford says the 2027 Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible uses a power-operated roof that opens at the touch of a button.
Ford has not said whether drivers can operate the roof while the car is moving.
The open roof changes more than the Mustang’s appearance. With no fixed roof between occupants and the exhaust system, the supercharged V-8’s sound becomes a much larger part of the driving experience.
Ford is clearly leaning into that aspect of the car rather than presenting the convertible as simply a softer version of the coupe.
Precision Purple Is New for the Dark Horse SC
Ford has introduced a new exterior color specifically for the 2027 Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible.
Called Precision Purple, the paint was developed from the Blue Ember Metallic color used on the standard Dark Horse.
Its appearance changes with the angle of the light, producing red and pink tones from certain viewpoints.
Ford says the color recalls the Mystichrome finishes used on earlier Mustang Cobra models.
Inside, customers can choose between Black Onyx and Space Gray upholstery.
Precision Purple gives the convertible a visual distinction beyond its missing roof, while the two interior colors keep the cabin choices relatively straightforward.
Mustang Dark Horse SC Convertible Follows the GT500 Era
Ford’s new convertible arrives after a long absence of an open-top Mustang at this level of performance.
The previous-generation Shelby GT500 ended production in 2022 without receiving a convertible version.
The 2015 Mustang Shelby GT350 also remained a fixed-roof car.
As a result, Ford has gone more than a decade without offering a drop-top Mustang with this kind of high-performance V-8 specification.
The 2027 Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible changes that.
Rather than bringing back a Shelby badge, Ford is using the Dark Horse SC name and its supercharged 5.2-liter V-8 to fill the role.
2027 Mustang Dark Horse SC Convertible Is More GT Than Track Car
Ford’s changes make the 2027 Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible different from the coupe in a way that goes beyond its roof.
The fixed-roof Dark Horse SC was developed around track performance.
The convertible is aimed at longer road drives and grand-touring use.
MagneRide receives a less aggressive calibration, while the Track package is unavailable. Carbon-fiber wheels, carbon-ceramic brakes and the Track package’s grippier tires therefore remain coupe-only equipment.
Ford has also kept the convertible’s structure relatively unchanged rather than adding extensive reinforcement.
The result is a 795-hp Mustang designed to deliver its performance on public roads rather than chase the coupe’s track credentials.
Orders Open This Fall
Ford plans to open orders for the 2027 Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible this fall.
Deliveries are scheduled to begin in spring 2027.
Ford has not announced final pricing yet.
The company expects the convertible to cost roughly $5,000 more than the Dark Horse SC coupe, which would put its price at approximately $110,000.
Ford has not confirmed the final figure, so the expected price should not be treated as the official MSRP.

The comparison shows why Ford did not simply describe the 2027 Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible as a Dark Horse SC coupe with a retractable roof.
Both cars have identical headline engine output, but Ford has changed the suspension and available equipment to give each version a different purpose.
Ford Is Keeping 795 HP in the Convertible
Ford could have reduced output to make the convertible easier to position as a grand tourer.
Instead, the 2027 Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible keeps the full 795 horsepower and 660 pound-feet produced by the supercharged 5.2-liter V-8.
The biggest compromises involve chassis tuning and equipment rather than engine performance.
MagneRide is softer, the Track package is unavailable and GTD-derived carbon-ceramic brakes and carbon-fiber wheels cannot be specified through the convertible’s Track package.
That combination gives Ford a clear split within the Dark Horse SC range.
2027 Mustang Dark Horse SC Convertible Brings Back an Open-Top V-8
The 2027 Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible puts Ford’s most powerful Mustang engine into a body style absent from the company’s recent high-performance lineup.
Its 795-hp supercharged V-8, rear-wheel drive and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission remain unchanged from the coupe.
Ford has instead altered the parts that matter most to everyday road driving. A softer MagneRide tune, no Track package and a convertible body structure shift the car toward grand touring.
Orders open this fall, with deliveries expected in spring 2027. Ford has not released final pricing, although a roughly $5,000 premium over the coupe would place the 2027 Mustang Dark Horse SC convertible near $110,000.
The roof comes down at the press of a button. Precision Purple gives it a new color option. Most importantly, Ford has brought back an open-top Mustang with a supercharged V-8 and nearly 800 horsepower.
