2028 Volvo XC60 Packs 78 Miles of Electric Range Into a Refreshed Body

Volvo quietly buried the lead on the 2028 Volvo XC60 T8 Long-Range — the battery went from 15 kWh to 38 kWh, and most people covering the reveal took a second read to make sure that number was right. The refresh lands early 2026 near the current $51,000 entry price — and until a rival PHEV matches that electric range figure, the 2028 XC60 owns a talking point no other plug-in hybrid crossover in America can take away from it.

The XC60 has been Volvo’s bestselling model globally across its entire history. This generation is pushing ten years old. Neither fact seems to bother the sales charts, and this update should hold that position comfortably through 2027 and beyond.

What’s Under the Hood — and Behind It

The old XC60 T8 had a 15 kWh battery. Fine for short errands, not much else. Volvo stuffed a 38 kWh pack into the 2028 version — same footprint, way more capacity — and paired it with a stronger electric motor without touching the 2.0-liter turbo or the 455 horsepower combined output. You still hit 60 in under five seconds. What’s different is you’re doing it on battery power for 78 miles before the gas engine wakes up. Commuters running 30-odd miles daily may genuinely forget there’s a petrol engine in there. That’s not a marketing line Volvo wrote — that’s just what the numbers work out to.

Buyers who don’t want electrification at all can still get the T5, 247 horsepower, same as before.

Front End, Rear End, New Panels

All the body panels ahead of the A-pillars on the 2028 Volvo XC60 are new — hood, fenders, the full fascia. Volvo’s Thor’s Hammer daytime running light signature shows up reworked, sitting visually flush against the lens face rather than floating inside it. The grille slims down noticeably. U.S.-market versions of the 2028 XC60 get matrix LED headlights for the first time, automatically reshaping the beam around oncoming traffic — drive a road you know well at night with these active and then try switching them off, and you’ll understand immediately why they matter.

At the back, taillights, liftgate, and rear bumper get restyled. Heather Bronze — a warm metallic — arrives as a new color option. Wheel choices expand to 20- and 21-inch sizes.

Cabin

Door panels are redesigned on the 2028 Volvo XC60. New wood trim. A nappa leather option called Cardamom joins the order sheet at the upper end. The 11.2-inch center screen stays, still running on Google’s platform — now with Gemini AI baked in — and over-the-air updates remain part of the package. Bowers & Wilkins audio holds its spot at the top of the options list. Volvo hasn’t moved the fundamental structure of the interior, which is the right call; the XC60 cabin has been one of the better-finished spaces in the compact luxury class for years, and redesigning what works is how you end up with something worse.

Driver Assistance

Fresh cameras, new radar, added processing power — the 2028 Volvo XC60 picks up automated emergency steering, a lane-change assist function inside Pilot Assist, and a rear-door alert that fires before you open into an approaching cyclist. The 360-degree camera system gains a 3D view mode. None of these features make headlines at an auto show. Three years into ownership, in a parking lot, on a dark road at 70 mph — that’s when they earn their keep.

Pricing and On-Sale Date

The 2028 Volvo XC60 goes on sale sometime in early 2026. Volvo hasn’t put a number on the T8 Long-Range yet — just said pricing stays close to today’s $51,000 base. Take that how you want.
