The Best Diesel Engine Oil for Your Car: Castrol vs Shell vs Liqui Moly vs Mobil

Your diesel has a DPF. Probably an EGR valve. Almost certainly a turbocharger. Each one of those puts specific demands on the oil running through the engine, and the wrong diesel engine oil either blocks the DPF, starves the turbo or leaves the engine running on insufficient film thickness at operating temperature.

Four diesel engine oils worth buying — Castrol Edge 5W-30 C3, Shell Helix Ultra ECT 5W-30 C3, Liqui Moly Top Tec 4600 5W-30 and Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30. All four protect a modern diesel with a particulate filter. All four meet the ACEA C3 standard your car most likely needs. The differences come down to which cars they’re approved for and how well they hold up under hard use.

What ACEA C3 and C4 Mean for a Diesel

ACEA C3 is the spec most modern European diesel engines need. It sets limits on sulphated ash, phosphorus and sulphur — the three compounds that clog DPF systems over time. ACEA C3 caps sulphated ash at 0.8%, which is low enough to keep the DPF running clean through a full service interval.

ACEA C4 goes further — sulphated ash capped at 0.5%. PSA engines, some Renaults, and certain Fiat diesels specify C4 specifically. Put a C3 oil in a C4-spec engine and the DPF clogs faster. Check your handbook before buying anything.

What HTHS Viscosity Does in a Diesel Engine

Compression in a diesel is higher than a petrol engine. The oil film between piston rings and cylinder walls takes more punishment as a result. HTHS viscosity at 150°C is the measurement that shows whether the oil holds up under that load or thins out.

ACEA C3 requires a minimum of 3.5 mPa·s HTHS. That’s the floor, not the target. A diesel running a turbo and high loads benefits from oil that sits at 3.5 or above. Oils that hit exactly 3.5 meet the spec. Oils above 3.5 offer more protection under sustained load — towing, motorway driving, hot climates.

Castrol Edge 5W-30 C3

Castrol’s Fluid TITANIUM additive technology creates a reinforced oil film under pressure — independently verified rather than a marketing claim. HTHS at 3.5 mPa·s hits exactly the ACEA C3 minimum. Sulphated ash at 0.77% is the lowest of the four, which makes it the safest choice for high-mileage diesels where the DPF has already seen a few years of service.

Renault diesel owners have two choices in this comparison — Castrol Edge C3 and Shell Helix Ultra ECT. Both carry Renault RN0710 approval. Mobil 1 ESP and Liqui Moly Top Tec 4600 don’t have it. VW, Audi, Skoda and SEAT diesel owners need VW 505.01 — Castrol Edge C3 has it. Mercedes-Benz diesel on a longlife schedule needs MB 229.51 — also on this one.

Renault diesel, VAG diesel, Mercedes-Benz diesel. Sulphated ash at 0.77% is the lowest here — high-mileage engines with an ageing DPF get the most from it.

Shell Helix Ultra ECT 5W-30 C3

Shell’s ECT stands for Emission Control Technology — the formulation is built around DPF and catalytic converter protection. The HTHS sits at 3.7 mPa·s, which is the highest of the four and the one number that separates it under sustained load. A diesel doing long motorway runs or regular towing gets more film thickness protection from Shell Helix Ultra ECT than from any other diesel engine oil in this comparison.

NOACK evaporation around 9% — slightly better than Castrol Edge C3. Renault RN0710 approval included alongside VW 505.01, MB 229.51 and BMW LL-04. Price is higher than the others at around £35 for 5 litres.

Pick this for: Turbocharged diesels under sustained load, towing, motorway driving, hot climates. The 3.7 HTHS is the reason.

Liqui Moly Top Tec 4600 5W-30

Germany’s best-selling motor oil brand by volume. Top Tec 4600 is Liqui Moly’s diesel-specific ACEA C3 formulation — different from the Top Tec 4200 in the 5W-30 petrol comparison, with additive chemistry tuned for diesel soot handling and DPF compatibility.

HTHS at 3.5+ mPa·s. NOACK around 10%. VW 505.01 and MB 229.51 both on the approval list. Renault RN0710 isn’t — pick Castrol or Shell if you drive a Renault diesel. Vauxhall and Opel diesel owners get something the other three don’t have here — GM Dexos2 approval sits only on the Liqui Moly Top Tec 4600.

Pick this for: VAG diesel, Mercedes-Benz diesel, Vauxhall and Opel diesel. Only diesel engine oil in this comparison with GM Dexos2.

Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30

Mobil 1 ESP covers VW 504/507, VW 505.01, MB 229.51/229.52, Porsche C30 and BMW Longlife-04 — more OEM approvals than any other diesel engine oil here. Porsche Macan or Cayenne diesel owners have one option in this comparison with C30 sign-off and that’s Mobil 1 ESP. Shell Helix Ultra ECT C3 and Liqui Moly Top Tec 4600 don’t have it.

HTHS at exactly 3.5 mPa·s — minimum ACEA C3. NOACK around 11%, the highest of the four. Flash point at 234°C is the best in this group. No Renault approval. No GM Dexos2.

Pick this for: Porsche diesel, VAG diesel, Mercedes-Benz diesel with the longest service intervals. Widest OEM approval list.

Which Diesel Engine Oil Goes in Which Car

VW, Audi, Skoda, SEAT diesel: All four oils here carry VW 505.01. Mobil 1 ESP and Liqui Moly Top Tec 4600 are the two most commonly used in VAG diesel workshops.

Mercedes-Benz diesel: MB 229.51 is on all four. Long service interval Mercedes diesel needs MB 229.52 — only Mobil 1 ESP has that.

BMW diesel: All four carry BMW LL-04. Shell Helix Ultra ECT C3 for the higher HTHS if the engine does long motorway runs.

Renault diesel: Castrol Edge 5W-30 C3 or Shell Helix Ultra ECT 5W-30 C3 — only two diesel engine oil options here with RN0710 approval.

Vauxhall or Opel diesel: Liqui Moly Top Tec 4600 — only one here with GM Dexos2.

Porsche diesel: Macan, Cayenne, Panamera — Mobil 1 ESP is the one. Porsche C30 approval isn’t on any other diesel engine oil in this group.

High-mileage diesel with an ageing DPF: Castrol Edge C3. Sulphated ash at 0.77% — lowest of the four and the gentlest on a DPF that’s seen a few years of service.

Turbocharged diesel, regular towing or hot country: Shell Helix Ultra ECT C3. HTHS at 3.7 mPa·s holds the oil film better than any other diesel engine oil here when the engine is under sustained load.

FAQ

Which diesel engine oil is right for a VW TDI?

VW 505.01 is what most VW TDI engines ask for. All four oils in this comparison have it. Mobil 1 ESP and Liqui Moly Top Tec 4600 are the two most used in VW dealer workshops.

Can I use ACEA C3 diesel engine oil in a C4 spec engine?

No. C4 engines — mostly PSA, some Renault and Fiat diesels — need sulphated ash below 0.5%. ACEA C3 caps at 0.8%. Using C3 in a C4 engine clogs the DPF faster.

Does diesel engine oil need to be full synthetic?

Modern diesel with a DPF, turbo and EGR — yes. Synthetic holds its viscosity through the full drain interval and keeps soot suspended better. Mineral and semi-synthetic break down faster under the heat and pressure a modern diesel runs at.

How often should diesel engine oil be changed?

Most modern European diesels on full synthetic diesel engine oil and following manufacturer longlife schedules run 10,000 to 15,000 miles between changes. High-mileage engines, short trips or city driving — drop to 7,500 miles regardless of the schedule.

What happens if you use petrol engine oil in a diesel?

Petrol engine oil doesn’t carry VW 505.01 or ACEA C3 DPF protection. It won’t immediately destroy the engine but it accelerates DPF clogging and runs higher sulphated ash levels than a diesel engine needs.

Which diesel engine oil has the best HTHS viscosity?

Shell Helix Ultra ECT 5W-30 C3 at 3.7 mPa·s — the highest of any diesel engine oil in this comparison.
