The Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung is now fully revealed after being teased back in January this year. It is the second Mythos series model from AMG, with production limited to just 30 units globally. All 30 have been sold already — before the official public reveal even took place.
Buyers wrote cheques without seeing the final car. That is the Mythos effect.
The Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung starts life as an AMG CLE53 coupe. It does not end up anywhere close to one.
To build the Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung, AMG’s engineers pulled out the CLE53’s 3.0-litre inline-six and replaced it with a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 637bhp and 850Nm of torque. The 646 in the name is not random — it reflects the engine’s output in PS. This V8 uses a flat-plane crankshaft, a configuration found in the Ferrari 296 GTB and various GT3 racing engines, chosen specifically because it cuts rotating mass and makes the throttle feel immediate rather than progressive. The engine breathes through a titanium exhaust system built with Slovenian exhaust specialist Akrapovič.
Cooling is handled through three separate circuits — a high-temperature loop for the engine itself, and two low-temperature circuits managing charge air going into the turbos, gearbox oil, and the 48-volt mild hybrid system.
All 637bhp goes to the rear wheels only. The CLE53 uses AMG’s 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system as standard. The CLE 646 does away with that entirely, routing drive through a nine-speed automatic gearbox and an electronically controlled limited-slip differential at the rear axle. AMG claims 0-100kmph in 3.9 seconds, 0-200kmph in 11.4 seconds, and a top speed of 310kmph.
Carbon Fibre Body, 170kg Weight Reduction
AMG went through the Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung component by component to find weight. The bonnet, roof, front fenders, side sills and rear bumper are all carbon fibre reinforced plastic. The rear windscreen and rear quarter windows have been replaced with polycarbonate. Rear seats — removed. Sound deadening material — removed. Even the 12-volt starter battery has been swapped for a lighter unit.
Total weight saving on the Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung over a standard CLE53 comes to approximately 170kg. The body is also 60mm wider, accommodating the larger front and rear tracks and the flared arches that come with them.
The rear wing has a manually adjustable centre section. Drivers can set it depending on the track. AMG says the full aero package produces over 250kg of downforce at 310kmph. At the front, a carbon fibre splitter sits below the grille, and there is a bonnet vent above it.
Bespoke Suspension, Carbon-Ceramic Brakes
The Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung gets a purpose-built steel coilover suspension with four-way adjustable dampers — low-speed compression, high-speed compression, low-speed rebound and high-speed rebound are all independently adjustable. It is the kind of setup normally found on dedicated track day cars.
Braking comes from carbon-ceramic discs — 420mm at the front with six-piston fixed calipers, 360mm at the rear. Wheels are 20-inch forged alloys. Tyre sizes are 305/30 at the front and 335/30 at the rear — the rears are notably wide for a road coupe.
Interior Stripped For Purpose
Inside the Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung, racing bucket seats replace standard chairs, simplified driver assistance systems, fewer steering wheel controls and a basic audio setup. Door cards are carbon fibre. An optional Performance Pack adds six-point racing harnesses for buyers planning serious track use.
No Price Confirmed, But Every Unit Is Gone
AMG has not announced pricing. The standard CLE53 starts at Rs 1.35 crore in India and $78,850 in the US. Given the hand-built construction, the bespoke V8, and the 30-unit cap, the Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung will sit considerably above that. The first Mythos car, the PureSpeed roadster based on the SL63, was already priced well into seven figures in major markets.
Not that the price matters much now. The list is closed.
