Renault has reintroduced the classic Gordini nameplate through the Renault 8 Gordini Concept. As an electric coupe with a low ride height, the Renault 8 Gordini Concept maintains the rear wheel drive characteristic of the original Renault 8 Gordini but has substituted the internal combustion engine with an electric motor rated at 270 horsepower.
The Renault 8 Gordini Concept was revealed at Renault Carwalk on September 24th and will remain on view at Paris Motor Show from October 12th through October 18th, 2026.
Renault has stated that the Renault 8 Gordini Concept is a “design study” and not an illustration of a future production model.
This distinction needs to be clearly understood. Renault is not presenting the Renault 8 Gordini Concept as the next production model to bear the Gordini name. Rather, Renault is utilizing the Renault 8 Gordini Concept as a medium for researching how one of its legendary high-performance models could be updated with electric technology and an entirely different body shape.

The Renault 8 Gordini Concept Replaces the Four-Door Sedan With a Two-Door Coupe
When it first appeared in 1964, the original Renault 8 Gordini was a small, four-door sedan equipped with a rear-mounted engine and power transmitted to the rear wheels.
Renault rated the original Renault 8 Gordini at 95 hp, providing the little sedan with much greater performance than other comparable models. The original Renault 8 Gordini established itself as a proving ground for drivers including Jean Ragnotti.
The exterior dimension of the Renault 8 Gordini Concept has been extensively modified from the original Renault 8 Gordini, yet it still contains much of the mechanical properties found in the original. The Renault 8 Gordini Concept is a two door coupe. It measures 4.12 m (13 ft 6 in) long; 1.88 m (6 ft 2 in) wide and 1.27 m (4 ft 2 in) high.
The front wheels have a diameter of 19 in., whereas the rear wheels have grown to 20 in. Renault says that the increased size of the rear wheels help create a visual link between the rear engine location, rear wheel drive layout of the original Renault 8 Gordini and the rear-mounted powertrain of the concept.
Consequently, the Renault 8 Gordini Concept is significantly larger and lower than the 1960s sedan. The large wheel arches, bulging fenders and low-slung roofline of the Renault 8 Gordini Concept provide the Renault 8 Gordini Concept with proportions similar to a contemporary rally-inspired coupe as opposed to the upright stance of the original Renault 8 Gordini.
A 270-HP Electric Motor Powers the Rear Wheels
One of the most important engineering changes made to the Renault 8 Gordini Concept are located beneath the hood. Renault’s original Renault 8 Gordini was powered by an internal combustion engine mounted at the rear; however, Renault’s new Renault 8 Gordini Concept will be powered by a 270 hp electric motor.
While Renault has provided very little information about the battery size, charge rate or how far the Renault 8 Gordini Concept will go on a single charge, Renault has primarily focused on providing technical information about the electric motor and rear-wheel-drive configuration for the vehicle.
The rear-wheel-drive layout used by Renault is particularly notable because Renault could have simply utilized the Gordini name as a design study.
However, the Renault 8 Gordini Concept maintains one of the defining features of the original Gordini – i.e., power is transferred to the rear wheels.
Furthermore, Renault has designed the rear section of the Renault 8 Gordini Concept based upon this historical tradition. The wide rear end and muscular wheel arches of the Renault 8 Gordini Concept are intended to visually represent the mechanical layout of the original Renault 8 Gordini, despite the fact that the Renault 8 Gordini Concept uses an electric powertrain.
Six Round Headlights Reference the Rally Renault 8
Although the Renault 8 Gordini Concept does not replicate the bodywork of the original Renault 8 Gordini, Renault has packed the exterior of the Renault 8 Gordini Concept with nods to historical examples of the Renault 8 Gordini.
Six round headlights dominate the front end of the Renault 8 Gordini Concept. This arrangement directly mirrors the extra rally lighting installed on competitive versions of the Renault 8 Gordini.
Renault has built these lights into a much more modern front fascia without including a standard grille.
The Renault 8 Gordini Concept also has squared-off wheel arches, shell-shaped rearview mirrors and a wide vent located at the bottom edge of the windshield.
The famous Gordini dual white stripes represent yet another prominent visual tie to the original Gordini.
Nonetheless, Renault states that on the Renault 8 Gordini Concept these stripes are considered structural design elements rather than simply graphic enhancements applied to the surface of the vehicle.
The paint on the Renault 8 Gordini Concept is an additional direct link to the original Gordini. The Renault 8 Gordini Concept has been created by Renault with a contemporary interpretation of the Bleu de France color that was used on the legendary Renault 8 Gordini.
The Renault 8 Gordini Concept Employs a Café Racer-Inspired Interior
Regarding interior features, the Renault 8 Gordini Concept has taken a minimalistic approach toward the interior design rather than filling the interior of the vehicle with multiple screens and luxurious trim.
Renault’s description of their interior design philosophy for the Renault 8 Gordini Concept is “café racer,” which is a concept derived from custom motorcycles where all non-essential components have been removed and only the essential components remain visible.
The two bucket seats have blue corduroy in their centers, representing another reference to the basic seating arrangements found in the original Renault 8 Gordini.
At first glance, the instrument panel of the Renault 8 Gordini Concept seems rather conventional; however, several round displays located above the aluminum dashboard are actually digital displays rather than conventional mechanical gauges.
Renault has kept relative simplicity in terms of control layout; however, a single red dot located on the central stopwatch button immediately draws attention to itself while all other aspects of the cabin are centered around the driver.
Renault Uses the Gordini Stripes Inside the Cabin
In addition to appearing on the exterior bodywork of the Renault 8 Gordini Concept, Renault has also used double white stripes inside the cabin of the Renault 8 Gordini Concept.
These stripes extend across the top portion of the dashboard where they change color from white to blue.
Renault has also coordinated other interior and exterior features with these stripes in order to make them integral parts of the overall design scheme of the vehicle.
This treatment differs significantly from that employed in regard to the original Renault 8 Gordini where these stripes were mainly employed as easily identifiable exterior graphics.
Designers at Renault have used this historical component as a visual link between various aspects of the new vehicle.
In addition, Renault chose not to include carbon fiber materials used elsewhere in the bodywork for the interior of the passenger compartment of the Renault 8 Gordini Concept.
The reason for this decision is as stated by Renault: “The use of carbon fiber was avoided within the passenger compartment in order to keep the focus on the aluminum, Alcantara, corduroy and minimal controls found in the cabin.”
Over 300 Renault Design Sketches Started the Project
Instead of requesting a direct contemporary rendition of the original Gordini sedan, Renault conducted an internal design competition involving its own designers as opposed to an open call for proposals from outside sources.
Over 300 design sketches were submitted by Renault designers. These submissions ranged from accurate retro-interpretations to more avant-garde GT-inspired concepts.
Ultimately, Renault chose two proposals for further development as 2/5-scale models before combining aspects from each proposal into its final design.
The method used by Renault for creating the Renault 8 Gordini Concept helps explain why the final design product bears so little resemblance to the original Gordini sedan.
Designers at Renault were not attempting to duplicate either the proportions or general appearance of a 1960s-era sedan.
Rather than doing so, designers at Renault chose to extract several fundamental features from the historical Gordini sedan (e.g., headlights, stripes, blue paint, wheel arches and rear-drive characteristics) and incorporate those features into a contemporary electric coupe.
The Renault 8 Gordini Concept Will Not Be Manufactured
Regardless of its 270 hp electric motor and intricately detailed interior, the Renault 8 Gordini Concept is not intended to be mass-produced as a production vehicle.
According to Renault, it is intended solely as a one-off demonstration created solely for purposes of design exploration.
According to Renault, it is intended to illustrate how an essential part of its heritage can be reinterpreted for today’s applications.
Therefore, there has been no official statement about production plans for this vehicle nor prices for batteries/ranges/retail versions thereof.
Instead, it is intended to serve as a tangible representation of the Gordini name in concept format while Renault develops its larger portfolio of electric vehicles and gets ready for its upcoming historical collection.
Renault 8 Gordini Concept Goes To Paris Motor Show
After debuting at Renault Carwalk on September 24th, the Renault 8 Gordini Concept will be publicly displayed at Paris Motor Show from October 12th through October 18th, 2026.
For Renault, it is less about announcing another electric model and more about showing what its historical performance identity can look like when rendered in modern automotive format.
The Renault 8 Gordini Concept retains many of the characteristics that made original Gordini recognizable – namely rear-wheel drive configuration, blue paint scheme, twin white stripes along with rally-inspired details.
Subsequently, its 270 hp electric motor, two-seat coupe configuration along with minimalist interior provide a way for translating those concepts into an entirely new era.
Currently, as it stands, the Renault 8 Gordini Concept is a one-off concept vehicle with no indication whatsoever that Renault intends to manufacture it as a production vehicle.
Instead, its function is intended to keep awareness of Gordini name in physical concept format while Renault continues developing its wider portfolio of electric vehicles and preparing for its upcoming heritage collection.
