Smart Number 2 Arrives in Rome Showing Its Clever Bench Seat and 186-Mile Range

The Smart Number 2 just showed its interior for the first time at an event in Rome, and the most interesting thing inside it is a seat that is not really a seat.

The ForTwo successor has been seen before — it appeared in Beijing in March, but only from the outside. Rome is the first time the interior has been shown. Paris Motor Show in October is the production reveal. Sales in 2027. Built in China.

The Bench Seat That Makes a Two-Seater Feel Different

The Smart Number 2 is still a two-person car. Nobody is squeezing three people in here. What Smart has done is design the centre section of the seating to fold down, creating a continuous bench surface across the full width of the cabin.

When the middle section is up, it functions as a centre armrest with window switches and door lock buttons built into its upper edge. A loop handle lets the driver or passenger raise or lower it. Fold it flat and the two seats become a bench — the cabin reads wider than it is. Getting out through the passenger door when parked against a wall goes from awkward to straightforward. In a city car, in a city, that matters.

The Dashboard

The Smart Number 2’s dashboard is shaped like an “S” — a curved surface that gives the interior a sense of width it would otherwise lack. Turbine-style air vents sit within it, pulled visually from Mercedes design language. Smart and Mercedes share parentage, and the influence is visible.

What the dashboard does not have is a wall of screens. Oversized displays have become the default move for EV interiors, with manufacturers apparently competing on screen size rather than usefulness. The Smart Number 2 takes a different approach — fewer screens, fewer physical controls, and a layout that reads as resolved rather than maximised.

Smart labels the current version as a concept. The Paris Motor Show reveal will show the production car. Given that the prototype is described as fully functional and the show is just months away, the gap between what has been shown and what buyers will actually get is unlikely to be large.

Electric Only, Dedicated Platform

The Smart Number 2 runs on a platform built specifically for electric vehicles. The previous Smart shared its architecture between combustion and electric variants — a compromise that limited how much the packaging could be optimised for either. EV-dedicated platform means the wheelbase runs longer and the overhangs shorter than a shared combustion/electric architecture would allow. More room inside from the same outside dimensions.

35.7 kWh battery. 186-mile WLTP range. Under 20 minutes from 10 to 80 percent on a fast charger. Turning circle 22.8 feet — same as the old EQ ForTwo, which could spin inside a car park space most SUVs cannot.

The suspension is multi-link independent at all four corners. In a segment where most competitors use simpler and cheaper setups, multi-link is a meaningful choice — it offers better wheel control over uneven urban surfaces and contributes to a more planted feel on the kind of broken pavement city cars spend most of their time on.

Safety — Tridion Cell Returns

When the original Smart arrived in the late 1990s, its structural party trick was the Tridion safety cell — a rigid steel cage surrounding the occupants that was designed to protect them in collisions that would compromise a conventional body structure of similar size.

The Smart Number 2 brings an evolved version of that cell. Smart has not detailed the specific changes yet — those come with the Paris Motor Show reveal. What has been stated is that the new Tridion takes the original concept further, which in a car that is still fundamentally small relative to what shares the road with it is a relevant selling point.

Paris in October, Sales in 2027

The Smart Number 2 production reveal is October 2026 at the Paris Motor Show. Sales follow in 2027.

Like every current Smart model, the Smart Number 2 is built in China. The Hambach factory in France built the original ForTwo until Ineos bought it in 2020 for Grenadier production. Smart moved on. China is where the Smart Number 2 gets made.

The Smart Number 2 sitting between a March exterior reveal in Beijing, a European interior reveal in Rome, and a production debut in Paris before going on sale is a deliberate rollout — each event showing a new layer of the car to maintain attention between reveals. October answers the remaining questions.

FAQs

What is the Smart Number 2?

ForTwo successor. Two seats, folding bench design, 35.7 kWh, 186-mile WLTP range. Paris Motor Show in October is the production reveal.

How many people does the Smart Number 2 seat?

Two. The bench folds to feel wider and helps with opposite-door exits, but passenger count stays at two.

What is the Smart Number 2’s range?

186 miles on the WLTP cycle from a 35.7 kWh battery.

How fast does the Smart Number 2 charge?

10 to 80 percent in under 20 minutes, according to Smart’s claim.

When does the Smart Number 2 go on sale?

Sales start 2027. Paris Motor Show October 2026 is the production reveal.

Where is the Smart Number 2 built?

China. All current Smart models are assembled there.

What is the Smart Number 2’s turning circle?

22.8 feet — the same as the old EQ ForTwo and one of the tightest of any production car.

What is the bench seat feature on the Smart Number 2?

The centre section of the seating folds flat, creating a continuous bench surface across the cabin. Window switches and door lock buttons sit on the upper edge of the movable section. It makes the interior feel wider and simplifies exiting through the opposite door in tight parking situations.
