Tesla posted 325 miles for the Model Y L Premium AWD on its configurator. The EPA ran its certification cycle and came back with 332. That’s 7 miles above what Tesla told buyers — on a $61,990 three-row SUV where every mile of stated range affects purchase decisions against the Rivian R1S and Kia EV9. The Tesla Model Y L range also cleared the standard Model Y Premium AWD’s 327-mile EPA figure, meaning the longer, heavier, six-seat version now out-ranges the shorter car it’s built on.
EPA Came Back Higher Than Tesla’s Numbers. Twice.
Tesla listed 325 miles for the Model Y L Premium AWD on 19-inch Machina 2.0 wheels before federal certification. EPA posted 332. On the 20-inch Uberhelix option, Tesla had 320. EPA certified 328 — 8 miles higher. Two wheel sizes, two certifications, both above Tesla’s pre-testing figures.
Sawyer Merritt caught the certified numbers first and posted them. Tesla has since updated its configurator. The old estimates are gone.
Automakers usually post conservative range estimates to avoid overshooting EPA certification. Tesla undershot its own conservative numbers on the Tesla Model Y L range — on both configurations.
Longer and Heavier. Still More Range.
Standard Model Y Premium AWD on 19-inch wheels: 327 miles EPA. Tesla Model Y L range on the same wheels: 332 miles. The L has a longer wheelbase, a third row, more weight — and beat the shorter car by 5 miles.
Two things made that happen.
Battery is bigger. Tesla hasn’t published the kilowatt-hour figure, but the extra capacity cleared the weight penalty from the longer platform.
Spoiler is different. Standard Model Y runs a bolt-on rear spoiler. Bolt-on units leave a gap at the base where they meet the body — at highway speeds that gap is a drag source. The Model Y L’s spoiler is molded into the body shell. One continuous surface, no gap, cleaner airflow off the tail. At 70 mph, where aero drag dominates energy consumption, that matters.
Those two changes pushed the Tesla Model Y L range past the standard car in EPA testing despite the size and weight increase.
20-Inch Wheels: 24-Mile Hit on the Standard Car. 4 Miles on the L.
Standard Model Y Premium AWD, 19-inch wheels: 327 miles. Same car, 20-inch wheels: 303 miles. Twenty-four miles gone — 7 percent of total range — for a wheel upgrade.
Tesla Model Y L range, 19-inch wheels: 332 miles. Same car, 20-inch Uberhelix: 328 miles. Four miles. One percent.
On the standard Model Y, 20-inch wheels are a genuine sacrifice. Twenty-four miles is a charging stop on some road trips, permanently removed for as long as those wheels stay on the car. On the Model Y L, the same upgrade costs 4 miles at 328 miles remaining — a penalty that won’t show up in daily driving for most owners.
That 20-mile gap between the two wheel penalties is the aero work showing up in the numbers. The integrated spoiler held the Tesla Model Y L range nearly flat across wheel sizes while the standard car dropped hard.
Rivian, Kia, and VW All Fall Short of 332 Miles.
Rivian R1S Max Pack: 321 miles EPA. Costs more than the Model Y L’s $61,990 base. Standard R1S Large Pack: 270 miles.
Kia EV9 rear-wheel-drive Long Range: 304 miles EPA. All-wheel drive falls below that. Seven seats, lower price, still 28 miles short.
Volkswagen ID.Buzz US spec: 234 miles EPA.
Ford has no three-row electric SUV with a US EPA rating. The Explorer EV is a European product.
332 miles. No other three-row electric SUV has an EPA certification that touches the Tesla Model Y L range. Not one.
What the Model Y L Is
Tesla launched it last year on a Launch Series reservation. Demo units are on showroom floors. It’s a stretched Model Y — same platform, longer wheelbase, third row, six seats. One configuration in the US: Premium AWD.
$7,000 over the standard Model Y Premium AWD’s $54,990 sticker. For that money the Model Y L adds a third row, a larger battery, an integrated spoiler, and returns a Tesla Model Y L range figure 5 miles longer than the car it shares a platform with.
Tesla has not published the battery capacity. The only figures on record are the EPA range numbers and an internal acknowledgment that the pack is larger than the one in the standard Model Y. No kilowatt-hour number has come from Tesla publicly.
Real-World Numbers Don’t Exist Yet.
EPA certification runs at controlled speeds, temperatures, and load. Real driving — 80 mph, cold weather, full third row, hard acceleration — pulls range below that number. On most electric vehicles the real-world gap runs 10 to 20 percent below EPA.
No outlet has completed a full real-world highway range test on the US-spec Model Y L Premium AWD. The Tesla Model Y L range figure of 332 miles is the EPA ceiling. Real-world results will land somewhere below it — how far below depends on how the car gets driven.

FAQ
How far does the Tesla Model Y L go on a charge?
332 miles on 19-inch Machina 2.0 wheels, 328 on 20-inch Uberhelix. Both EPA-certified. Both above what Tesla’s configurator posted pre-certification.
Does the Model Y L out-range the standard Model Y?
Yes. Standard Model Y Premium AWD is 327 miles on 19-inch wheels. Tesla Model Y L range is 332 — 5 miles more from a heavier, longer car.
Why does the bigger car get more range?
Larger battery and an integrated rear spoiler with no gap at the body junction. Both changes together overcame the weight from the longer wheelbase and third row.
What does the 20-inch wheel upgrade cost in range?
Four miles on the Model Y L — 332 down to 328. On the standard Model Y, the same upgrade costs 24 miles. The Tesla Model Y L range barely moves. The standard car doesn’t recover.
What does the Model Y L cost?
$61,990. Premium AWD. Only configuration available in the US.
How does the Model Y L stack up against the Rivian R1S and Kia EV9 on range?
R1S Max Pack tops at 321 miles and costs more. EV9 Long Range rear-wheel drive hits 304 miles. Neither reaches 332.
