Toyota announced the updated Tundra pickup two days ago. Today it did the same thing to the Sequoia. Same playbook: revised front end, Trailhunter off-road package, upgraded interior tech. The Toyota Sequoia 2027 goes on sale this fall. Pricing is not out yet.
Trailhunter — The Part Worth Talking About
Old Man Emu suspension. Michelin LTX Trail 265/70R-18 all-terrain tyres. Locking rear differential. Front recovery hooks. Extra underbody protection. Multi-Terrain Select. Crawl Control. Bronze wheels. Trailhunter badges.
That is the full Trailhunter package on the Toyota Sequoia 2027, and it sits on the SR5 trim — the base model. Old Man Emu is the same Australian suspension company that does the dampers on the Trailhunter Tacoma Hybrid and 4Runner Hybrid. These are not lifted-look springs with a badge on them. They change how the vehicle behaves off pavement.
The locking rear differential is the most practically significant item on that list for anyone planning to actually use the thing off-road. On a loose or uneven surface, an open diff sends power to the wheel with the least grip. A locker ends that problem. Finding one on the base SR5 variant of a full-size luxury SUV is not what most buyers expect.
Toyota has been running the Trailhunter template across the Tacoma, 4Runner, and Tundra with consistent hardware. The Toyota Sequoia 2027 joins that family — same supplier, same basic approach, full-size SUV body on top.
Front End, Fog Lights, LED Bar
Bigger grille. Rectangular fog lights integrated into the front bumper instead of mounted separately. Chunkier lower bumper section.
The available LED light bar in the grille is now brighter than before. RIGID fog lights and front recovery hooks are available across the full Toyota Sequoia 2027 lineup now rather than being trim-specific options. Toyota has not changed the silhouette or proportions — this is visual freshening at the front, not a ground-up redesign.
The SR5 Finally Gets a Real Screen
Every Toyota Sequoia 2027 now comes with a 14-inch touchscreen. The outgoing SR5 ran an 8-inch unit. Eight inches on a $60,000-plus full-size SUV was already difficult to defend. For 2027 that argument is gone.
The 14-inch display runs Toyota’s latest infotainment with new voice assistant functions. A dash camera system is now built in — not an add-on device, integrated into the infotainment — capturing 20-second clips.
Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 is standard on the Toyota Sequoia 2027. Adaptive cruise, auto high-beams, automatic emergency braking. Hardware and detection have been upgraded versus the previous generation of the system.
Six Trims, Hybrid Only, Prices Coming
SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794 Edition, TRD Pro, Capstone. Six trims, same as before. Trailhunter is a package on the SR5, not a seventh trim.
Every Toyota Sequoia 2027 runs the twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6 hybrid. There is no non-hybrid option. The powertrain is unchanged from the current model — more power than competitors’ naturally aspirated V8s, different ownership experience than a conventional engine.
Toyota has not published pricing. Full specifications are coming before the fall on-sale date.
Against the Expedition Timberline and Tahoe Z71
Trailhunter puts the Toyota Sequoia 2027 in a specific fight — the Ford Expedition Timberline and Chevy Tahoe/Suburban Z71 are the other off-road-oriented full-size SUVs. All three target the same buyer: someone who needs eight seats and a trailer hitch most of the time and wants the vehicle to actually work when the pavement stops.
Old Man Emu suspension and a locking differential are credible hardware. Whether the Toyota Sequoia 2027 Trailhunter out-performs the Timberline off-road comes down to specific tuning neither company makes easy to compare. On the spec sheet, the Sequoia hardware is real.
The hybrid powertrain is the one thing buyers moving from a conventional competitor will notice differently. Service intervals, dealer familiarity, and the behaviour of the electric assist at low speeds are all different from a V8. None of that is a problem. It is a different experience, and some buyers prefer the conventional approach.
