Brazil’s biggest rodeo wasn’t just about bulls last week. Volkswagen rolled the Volkswagen Amarok 2027 into the arena at the Festa do Peão de Barretos — still wearing camouflage, still hiding its face — and dropped one number that made everyone pay attention. Over 464 horsepower. From a pickup truck. With a plug-in hybrid system. And zero to 62 mph in under five seconds.
The man running Volkswagen South America compared it to a Porsche Panamera. His words, not ours.
Nobody Expected a Pickup Truck to Sound Like This
Alexander Seitz told journalists in Peru earlier this year the new Amarok could keep up with a Porsche Panamera under hard acceleration. Think about what that means for a second. A midsize pickup truck. Chasing a Porsche sport sedan. And the person saying it runs Volkswagen’s entire South American operation — not a marketing intern writing copy.
The plug-in hybrid system behind that claim is called the Amarok 800 TSI. The 800 refers to 800 Newton-meters of torque — 590 lb-ft. Power clears 464 horsepower. Standard all-wheel drive. Under five seconds to 62 mph.
Today’s Amarok at its best makes 254 horsepower from a 3.0-liter V6 diesel. The Volkswagen Amarok 2027 nearly doubles that. No other midsize pickup in South America comes anywhere close to these numbers. Not the Hilux. Not the Ranger. Not the S10. The Amarok 800 TSI would sit in its own category if these figures hold up.
Battery capacity and electric range — Volkswagen hasn’t said yet. Full specs arrive gradually before the 2027 launch.
Volkswagen Picked a Rodeo on Purpose
Festa do Peão de Barretos isn’t just Brazil’s biggest country music festival. It’s where farmers go. Agricultural business owners go. The people who buy pickup trucks in enormous numbers across South America every single year go there in huge numbers.
Volkswagen didn’t just bring the Volkswagen Amarok 2027 either. Hours earlier in the same arena they showed the brand new Tukan — a smaller pickup aimed at buyers of the Fiat Strada. The Amarok goes after Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Chevrolet S10 and Mitsubishi Triton buyers. Two completely different trucks. Same night. Same arena. Same very specific audience.
Volkswagen’s message to South America was loud and clear at Barretos. They’re serious about this market and they brought receipts.
Here’s What Volkswagen Didn’t Say at Barretos
The presentation focused on South American engineering teams, German brand values and dynamic character. All true things. But Volkswagen left something out.
The Volkswagen Amarok 2027 is built on the same platform as the Maxus Interstellar X — a Chinese pickup from SAIC, the state-owned automaker Volkswagen has partnered with in China since the 1980s. Spy photos of the Amarok prototype show bodywork, doors, headlights, bumpers and proportions that follow the Interstellar X’s layout so closely the connection is impossible to miss. Even under full camouflage the cabin shape and window line tell the story.
Volkswagen hasn’t said this publicly. But the photos don’t lie.
Using a Chinese platform isn’t automatically a problem. The Interstellar X architecture was built from scratch to handle petrol engines, plug-in hybrid systems and full electric powertrains — something Volkswagen needed for the Amarok 2027 without spending years developing from zero. Smart use of an existing partnership.
The South American teams handle everything that makes it drive like an Amarok. Suspension setup, steering feel, electronics calibration, driving dynamics — all being tuned specifically for Brazilian and Argentine roads. Those roads are rough. The conditions are demanding. A Chinese platform calibrated for Chinese roads needs real work before it’s ready for South American buyers.
The front end gets the biggest visual rework — new grille, bumper, lights — to connect the Volkswagen Amarok 2027 to Volkswagen’s current design language rather than its Maxus origins.
Bigger Cabin, More Space, Better Rear Seat
Size comparison is straightforward. Maxus Interstellar X: 216.5 inches long, 129.9-inch wheelbase. Current Amarok: 210.6 inches long, 122.0-inch wheelbase.
That 7.9-inch wheelbase gain mostly goes into the rear seat — where the current Amarok already loses against newer rivals. Three adults across the back stops being a negotiation and starts being a reasonable seating arrangement. Wider body helps front occupants breathe easier too.
The platform combines a reinforced unibody structure with elements that work like a ladder frame — targeting comfort and stiffness without losing load-carrying ability. Payload capacity on the Interstellar X runs up to 2,205 pounds. The Volkswagen Amarok 2027 needs to match that number to be taken seriously by the farmers in that Barretos arena.
The Camouflage Wrap Is a Work of Art
Volkswagen’s South American design team built the wrap from scratch. References to the continent’s landscapes and culture run across the entire body — Monte Fitz Roy, Iguazu Falls, the Amazon rainforest, the Nazca Lines. The Copacabana sidewalk pattern sits on one panel. Easter Island’s Moai statues on another. Agricultural references complete the picture — boots, a hat, an ox, cacti, topographic contour lines running through everything.
Some of these drawings reportedly end up as small hidden details on the final production bodywork. Where exactly Volkswagen isn’t saying yet.
Through all of it the Maxus connection stays visible. Cabin shape. Window line. Body proportions. The front end is where VW’s own stamp shows most clearly when the camouflage finally comes off.
800,000 Trucks From One Factory — More Coming
General Pacheco in Argentina has built every Amarok since 2010. The tally sits at 800,000 units — the highest production total of any vehicle Volkswagen has ever made in Argentina. Over 465,000 of those shipped to buyers in more than 100 countries.
The Volkswagen Amarok 2027 builds at General Pacheco too. Preparing the plant for plug-in hybrid production costs serious money — Volkswagen is committing 4 billion Brazilian reais to Argentine operations as part of a 20 billion-real South America plan running through 2028. New assembly equipment, updated production lines, modernized processes throughout. The V6 diesel Amarok keeps selling until the new generation arrives.
The SUV Volkswagen Won’t Confirm Exists
People who know Volkswagen’s internal plans well say a seven-seat three-row SUV based on the Volkswagen Amarok 2027 platform has already been approved inside the company. The internal name is the Atacama Project.
Wheelbase reportedly stretches to around 130 inches on the SUV — the larger platform makes that possible in a way the current Amarok couldn’t. Plug-in hybrid powertrain from the Amarok 800 TSI is the likely candidate for power. Volkswagen hasn’t publicly acknowledged the Atacama Project at all. Launch timing would come after the pickup — not immediately following it.
Internal approval on something like this doesn’t happen casually. The Atacama Project is real. Volkswagen just isn’t ready to talk about it yet.

Questions People Are Asking About the Volkswagen Amarok 2027
When does it go on sale?
2027 is locked in. Month hasn’t been announced. Specs, trims and pricing details roll out gradually before the launch date.
Will it really make over 464 horsepower?
That’s what the Amarok 800 TSI is expected to deliver — along with 590 lb-ft of torque. Volkswagen South America’s own chairman compared the acceleration to a Porsche Panamera. Full confirmation comes with the official spec release before launch.
Is it really built on a Chinese platform?
Prototype photos make the Maxus Interstellar X connection very hard to deny. Volkswagen and SAIC have been partners in China since the 1980s. Volkswagen hasn’t confirmed this publicly. The spy shots speak clearly enough on their own.
Where is it built?
General Pacheco in Argentina — same address as every Amarok since 2010. Volkswagen is spending 4 billion Brazilian reais upgrading the plant for plug-in hybrid production.
How much bigger is it than the current Amarok?
About 5.9 inches longer and 7.9 inches more in wheelbase. Most of that wheelbase difference becomes rear seat room — exactly where the current Amarok falls short against newer competition.
What is the Atacama Project?
Volkswagen’s internal name for a reported seven-seat SUV on the Amarok 2027 platform. Three rows of seats, wheelbase around 130 inches, plug-in hybrid power expected. Volkswagen isn’t talking about it. Doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.
Will there be a full electric version?
Nothing confirmed. Plug-in hybrid is the confirmed direction for 2027. The platform technically supports full electric powertrains. An electric Amarok at some point isn’t impossible — just unannounced.
Who are the main rivals?
Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Chevrolet S10, Mitsubishi Triton in South America. None of them offer anything approaching 464 horsepower right now. The Amarok 800 TSI in that competitive set would be in a completely different performance league.
Volkswagen brought a camouflaged truck to a rodeo and compared it to a Porsche. The Volkswagen Amarok 2027 stays mostly under wraps until the details roll out before the 2027 launch. What’s visible already — nearly double the current model’s power, a larger cabin, a Chinese platform nobody’s admitting to, a factory getting billions in upgrades and a secret SUV project — points to a truck Volkswagen genuinely believes can shake up the South American pickup market. The rodeo was just where it started.
