Volkswagen ID3 GTI Is the Most Powerful GTI Ever Built — 322 HP and Rear-Wheel Drive

Volkswagen showed the Volkswagen ID3 GTI this week. The ID.3 GTX it replaces only came out in 2024 — two years on sale before Volkswagen moved on. 322 horsepower, rear-wheel drive, GTI badge on an electric hot hatch. European buyers can order one from spring 2027. Price not confirmed yet, no other markets announced.

Two things stand out. The Volkswagen ID3 GTI is the most powerful GTI Volkswagen has ever built. It’s also the first GTI to run rear-wheel drive in the nameplate’s entire history. Both claims need some context before they land the way Volkswagen wants them to.

Most Powerful GTI Ever — By One Horsepower

322 hp beats the Golf GTI Edition 50 by exactly one horsepower. That’s the margin. Volkswagen didn’t squeeze more power out of the electric motor compared to the GTX it replaces — 322 hp was already the GTX number. Torque stays at 402 pound-feet. 0-62 mph in 5.6 seconds. Top speed electronically capped at 124 mph. Nothing on the performance sheet changed from the GTX. The Volkswagen ID3 GTI just happens to be the most powerful GTI by default because the bar wasn’t set very high.

First Rear-Wheel-Drive GTI

Every GTI in history has been front-wheel drive. The Volkswagen ID3 GTI breaks that because the MEB platform puts the motor at the rear — not because Volkswagen made a deliberate chassis decision, but because that’s how the platform was designed. The ID. Polo GTI, which actually got the electric GTI badge first, runs front-wheel drive on the MEB+ architecture. That car sits closer to the traditional GTI ethos. The ID.3 GTI just goes its own direction.

From 1976 Golf GTI to 2027 ID3 GTI

The original Golf GTI launched in 1976. Fuel injection, front-wheel drive, 110 horsepower from a 1.6-liter engine. It cost more than a standard Golf and sold out immediately. That car invented the hot hatch segment — everything from the Ford Fiesta ST to the Honda Civic Type R owes something to it.

Every Golf GTI since kept the same basic recipe. Petrol engine, front-wheel drive, practical enough to use every day. The badge built up 50 years of meaning before Volkswagen put it on the Volkswagen ID3 GTI. Whether an electric rear-wheel-drive car earns that history or just borrows it is a conversation that’ll run until the first test drives land.

Battery and Range

79 kWh net battery, lithium-ion. Volkswagen estimates 373 miles on the WLTP cycle — six miles more than the GTX managed. 183 kW DC fast charging, 10 to 80 percent in 29 minutes. Real world range will be less than the 373-mile WLTP figure — how much less depends on how fast you drive and whether it’s January in Norway or July in Spain.

How It Stacks Up Against the Cupra Born VZ

Cupra Born VZ is the one to compare it against. 326 hp, rear-wheel drive, 5.6 seconds to 62 mph — same numbers as the Volkswagen ID3 GTI on paper. The difference is range: Born VZ manages 311 miles WLTP against the ID3 GTI’s 373. That’s a 62-mile gap, which matters on a long motorway run. Pricing on both is similar — Born VZ starts around £45,000, the Volkswagen ID3 GTI is expected near the GTX’s old £43,000 entry point. Neither is confirmed yet.

What Changed From the GTX

Styling got the full ID.3 Neo facelift treatment — more aggressive front end, GTI red accents, glossy black trim, vertical LED daytime running lights not available on the base car. GTI badge replaces GTX on the front doors. 20-inch wheels with 225 tires, upgradable to 235 at extra cost. Body-colored tailgate instead of black. Roof now matches the body color too.

Inside the Volkswagen ID3 GTI is where the real improvements landed. Proper steering wheel buttons, a volume knob, dedicated rear window switches — physical controls that should have been there from day one. The tiny driver’s display is gone, replaced by a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster paired with a 12.9-inch infotainment screen. The touch slider under the screen that everyone hated is gone, replaced by a proper row of conventional controls on the center console. Body-hugging front seats and red cabin accents throughout round out the GTI treatment.

GTI Mode and Fake Engine Sound

Volkswagen added a dedicated GTI drive mode that maxes out every system setting and unlocks launch control. It also pipes in a fake engine sound to mimic a Golf GTI. Volkswagen has confirmed the petrol Golf GTI stays in production for years yet — so if the sound simulation bothers you, the real thing is still on the order sheet.

On Sale Date and Markets

Spring 2027 in Europe. No other markets confirmed yet for the Volkswagen ID3 GTI. The ID.3 doesn’t sell in the US — Volkswagen has never brought it stateside — so North American buyers are out for now. Pricing hasn’t been announced but the outgoing GTX started at £43,000 in the UK. Expect the Volkswagen ID3 GTI to land somewhere close to that when the full order books open.
