Volvo Station Wagon Is Making a Surprising Comeback as Electric EV60 by 2028

Volvo confirmed its biggest product expansion in 99 years this week on their official newsroom, announcing 13 new vehicles set to launch globally by 2030. Seven of those are headed for Western markets, and buried in the presentation slides is a reference to “new low and high body types” that points directly at a Volvo station wagon comeback. A new Volvo station wagon would be the first in the US since the V60 and V90 were discontinued.

Two things happened this week at Volvo. The V60 and V90 got their US death sentences confirmed after 2026. Then Volvo announced 13 new cars by 2030.

Volvo’s 13 New Models — Platforms and Body Types

Volvo is splitting the 13 new models between two regional lineups, six for China and seven for Western markets. The Western models ride on SPA2 and SPA3 platforms. SPA2 already underpins the EX90 and the now-departed Polestar 3. SPA3 is the newer architecture beneath the EX60.

The lineup will mix fully electric cars with third-generation hybrids. Volvo didn’t name individual models or confirm body styles. What it did confirm in a presentation slide is “new low and high body types.” In Volvo’s language, low body is a wagon or sedan — and a Volvo station wagon fits that description exactly. High body is an SUV. The company built its entire reputation on one of those two categories.

The Volvo Station Wagon Evidence

The presentation slide isn’t the only evidence. Automotive News reported Volvo has an electric Volvo station wagon and sedan in development for the US — ES60 and EV60 are the likely names, SPA3 is the platform, 2028 is the target. Price starting in the low $50,000s. That report predates this week’s product announcement and the two line up precisely.

A second Automotive News report points to a compact electric SUV called EX50 arriving fall 2027, replacing the discontinued EX40 on the SPA3 platform. That accounts for one of the seven Western-market models. The ES60 sedan and EV60 Volvo station wagon would account for two more.

SPA3 Platform and What It Delivers

SPA3 is Volvo’s most advanced platform and the one doing the most work in the upcoming lineup. The EX60 is already on SPA3 — bigger than the EX40, longer wheelbase, larger battery. SPA3 also charges faster than SPA2. Full platform details on Volvo’s official site.

A Volvo station wagon on SPA3 gets all of that. Lower body height than an SUV produces better aerodynamics, and on an electric car, aerodynamics directly translate to range. The EX60 SUV on SPA3 targets around 300 miles of range. A wagon body on the same platform could push that figure higher. The physics work in the Volvo station wagon’s favour.

Who Else Builds Electric Wagons Right Now

Taycan Sport Turismo costs $93,300. Polestar 2 is a hatchback, not a wagon. Audi e-tron Avant exists in Germany. BMW i5 Touring exists in Germany. Neither one reaches American showrooms. The $50,000 electric wagon in the US is a gap nobody has filled.

EV60 at $50,000 in 2028 and Volvo has the electric wagon segment in the US entirely to themselves.

Volvo’s Wagon History

Volvo sold over 2.8 million 240 wagons between 1974 and 1993. Then in 1995 they took the 850 wagon racing — BTCC, Brands Hatch, turbocharged five-cylinder, 240 horsepower, pole position. A Volvo station wagon qualifying on pole at a touring car race is still one of the stranger things that actually happened in motorsport.

V70, V50, V60, V90 — Volvo kept making wagons through the whole SUV era. By 2026 the V60 and V90 are both gone from the US market. No replacement announced, no alternative offered. Volvo just walked away from the body style that made the brand what it is, and left a specific type of buyer with no obvious next car.

An electric Volvo station wagon on SPA3, the same platform that underpins the EX60, would be lighter, lower and more aerodynamically efficient than any SUV Volvo builds. Battery range on a wagon body would likely exceed the equivalent SUV.

Other Models in the 2030 Lineup

EX50 compact SUV in fall 2027 is the one confirmed model with a date attached, per Automotive News. It replaces the discontinued EX40 on SPA3. Everything else is platform confirmation and body type language. Names, specs and prices are all unconfirmed.

The XC40, XC60 and XC90 updates shown last week are not part of the 13 new vehicles. Those are refreshes of existing models, not new product additions. The 13 new vehicles are genuinely new entries in new or existing segments.
